SmartTray: plastic cable ducts for infrastructure
SmartTray cable trays make cable laying and maintenance easy. They are a strong and a lightweight alternative to concrete cable trays. SmartTray is available exclusively in Benelux in two types:
- SmartTray Kratos: ideal for above-ground applications.
- SmartTray Ultim: a lightweight solution that provides fast access to the cable network.

Strong and durable cable trays for every infrastructure project
The SmartTray Ultim and SmartTray Kratos cable trays are designed for infrastructure projects. You install them quickly without heavy equipment, and they last for years without maintenance.
Sustainable and smart
Recycled, linkable cable trays available with various lids. Applicable within many sectors. Smart design ensures a long service life.
Easy installation and optimal protection
The cable trays are easy and quick to install. Cable routes are protected and the covers can be fitted with additional fixings.
Lighter than steel and concrete
Plastic (SmartTray Ultim) and fibreglass (SmartTray Kratos) are excellent alternatives. They do not rust and are easy to install without heavy equipment.
Easy access to the cable network
Thanks to the smart design of both the Kratos and Ultim, you always have quick and easy access to the cable network. Useful when servicing, replacing or extending cables.

All about the SmartTray
Thanks to the 6-metre lengths and lightweight material, assembly is easy and quick. The double wall gives the Kratos extreme strength and only one support per 6 metres is sufficient.
SmartTray Kratos is ideal for locations where you cannot enter the ground, such as bridges, overpasses and noise barriers.
SmartTray Kratos can be supplied for infrastructure projects in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
The fibreglass-reinforced plastic is dimensionally stable and hardly stretches or shrinks. This makes the channel particularly suitable for use above ground
Developed for long-term exposure to overhead UV light. The material has excellent fire-resistant properties and is halogen-free.
Available in different sizes:
- 50 mm wide: length 3m (very suitable for ERTMS)
- 100 mm wide: length 6m
- 250 mm wide: length 6m
The strong, lightweight alternative to concrete. Thanks to its unique rib structure, the gutter can be lifted and installed by one person, without the need for heavy equipment.
SmartTray Ultim can be easily and stably buried. Ideal for locations along railway tracks, near platforms, loading infrastructures, high-voltage stations or industrial complexes
SmartTray Ultim is connectable by the metre and very easy to dig in (by hand). This makes installation in hard-to-reach places many times faster than with traditional systems.
Made of recycled plastic and completely maintenance-friendly. The cable duct always provides easy network access for servicing, replacing or adding cables.
The closed system protects cables from rodents. The lids have a non-slip top layer and a smart locking mechanism.
Available in two sizes (length 1m) with various bends:
- 100 x 155 mm
- 240 x 155 mm
- Lid options: PP (standard) or Composite (A15 load class)
For cable routes along railway tracks and at platforms, the SmartTray Ultim offers a lightweight and quick-to-install alternative to heavy concrete channels. On engineering structures such as bridges or at noise barriers where digging is not possible, the SmartTray Kratos is the ideal above-ground solution.
Guide cables at substations, charging infrastructure and raceways with the SmartTray Ultim for quick, manual installation in hard-to-reach areas. Here, the SmartTray Kratos offers a fireproof and UV-resistant solution for all overhead sections where extra protection is required.
For factories, terminals and airports. Use the SmartTray Ultim for a closed system that optimally protects cables underground while keeping them easily accessible for maintenance. For above-ground installations along facades or on fences, the SmartTray Kratos offers a weatherproof and dimensionally stable cable tray solution.
Lay cable routes along roads and tunnels neatly with the SmartTray Ultim, which is easy to dig in. For crossing over engineering structures, the SmartTray Kratos carries cables safely and stably along with minimal stretch or shrinkage, even at large spans.

Van Gelder / Rijkswaterstaat
Protection of cables on A10 during Zuidasdok project
Along the A10 motorway, Van Gelder installed our Kratos cable ducts on several bridge sections on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat. The cable ducts protect and support existing cables during the long-term Zuidasdok project, which runs for around 10 years. Thanks to Kratos' robust construction, the cables remain easily accessible and protected from damage. In this way, a stable and sustainable infrastructure has been realised that matches the complexity of this environment.
Frequently asked questions about SmartTray
Is your question not listed here? Feel free to call or e-mail us. We will be happy to help you find the right solution for your project.
What exactly is a plastic cable tray?
A plastic cable tray is a system made of high-quality plastic used to protect and guide cables and pipes. Although they are often installed in the ground (such as the Ultim), there are also specific variants for above-ground use on structures (such as the Kratos). The main purpose is to safely protect cables while keeping them accessible for repair, maintenance or adding additional cables.
What is the difference between SmartTray Ultim and SmartTray Kratos?
The main difference is in the application and material:
- SmartTray Ultim: A lightweight, recycled plastic alternative to concrete gutters, designed to be easily buried.
- SmartTray Kratos: Made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic and specifically developed for above-ground applications on structures, such as bridges and viaducts, where extreme strength and weather resistance are required.
Are SmartTray cable trays suitable for above-ground use?
Yes, both types can be used above ground, but the SmartTray Kratos was specially developed for this purpose. The Kratos is UV-resistant, fire-resistant and dimensionally stable, making it ideal for mounting on viaducts and noise barriers, for example. The Ultim can be used both below and above ground, for example along railway tracks or at loading infrastructures.
Are SmartTray cable trays available outside the Benelux?
No, the cable trays in the SmartTray series are exclusively available in the Benelux.
Why choose plastic cable trays instead of steel or concrete?
Plastic cable trays like the SmartTray series offer significant advantages in installation speed and cost. The Ultim is much lighter than concrete and can be installed by one person without heavy equipment. Current steel prices and minimal maintenance costs often make the Kratos the best-priced option for safe cable routing along roads and over engineering structures.
